The Art of DEM

The Art of DEM For some reason, I am drawn to Digital Elevation Models (DEM). They express so much information in such an elegant way. Their creation does require embedding GPS data, but thats almost a given these days as its a straightforward exercise pulling points out of sonar. In simple terms, a DEM is Read more about The Art of DEM[…]

Updated – the UB 116 & Builders Plans

Error Correction Time Its time to confess a small but significant mistake when annotating the 3D model of the UB 116:- It turns out I had labelled the bowplanes incorrectly, for a check of the builders plan shows their shape as matching hydroplanes. And as any good submarine nerd knows, bowplanes are at the pointy Read more about Updated – the UB 116 & Builders Plans[…]

The Heart of Gold & UB 116

Deep3D were back in the wreck diving spiritual homeland of Scapa Flow last week, sleeping, eating and diving from the MV Valkyrie for 6 days of cold water fun. The majority of the wrecks of Scapa Flow date from the First World War and are very big subjects indeed.  Previous experience teaches us that scanning large subjects can be exhausting Read more about The Heart of Gold & UB 116[…]

Deep3D and the Coronation Virtual Trail

Spring 2016 saw Deep3D collaborating and contributing to a ground-breaking project – the Coronation Wreck Virtual Dive Trail. The association with the Coronation site and the licensees was long-standing, with both traditional photography and 3D photogrammetry work already completed so when it came to commissioning the work MAST turned to Deep3D. However, the whole site Read more about Deep3D and the Coronation Virtual Trail[…]

Scanning Humans and Other Details

The orthophotos generated from the 3D model can be very detailed indeed, but they can reveal flaws if things move during scanning. With humans, this causes a bit of a problem. Here’s an example of the E49 and model Rob:-   This print is A1 in size and Rob appears alongside the submarine, adding great Read more about Scanning Humans and Other Details[…]

Panoramic Wreck Prints

Last month’s visit to Shetland was very productive. A week a way in cold but clear water has yielded some very pleasing models:- https://sketchfab.com/simonbrown/collections/shetland And from these wrecks, it is now possible to create some very large but highly detailed 2D panoramic views of a wreck, big enough to see from bow to stern and Read more about Panoramic Wreck Prints[…]
