NDAC Orthophoto

Over the last week the NDAC model grew a little bit, with the BaE 146 aircraft joining the overall site (Thanks Marcus!). An updated model will be published soon. GPS Data Other progress included adding GPS data, using Google Earth to glean the latitude and longitude of the various buoys that mark the attractions. Depth was taken Read more about NDAC Orthophoto[…]

The NDAC Diver Attractions Model

Regular visitors to the News section may remember that Simon Brown (Deep3D) and Marcus Blatchford had a very informal project running to map as much of the National Diving & Activity Centre as they could. If you want to read more about how the model was created, do please read on. But if the model is all you Read more about The NDAC Diver Attractions Model[…]

Digital Elevation Models Revisited

The Model Digital Elevation Models (DEM) are one of the outputs photogrammetry delivers. They are (almost) free, as long as you have GPS data (Latitude, longitude and depth) for known points then orientating and generating a view of the undulations of the scan is straightforward. The SS Gwladmena was scanned back in August 2016. At Read more about Digital Elevation Models Revisited[…]

Deep3D and the Coronation Virtual Trail

Spring 2016 saw Deep3D collaborating and contributing to a ground-breaking project – the Coronation Wreck Virtual Dive Trail. The association with the Coronation site and the licensees was long-standing, with both traditional photography and 3D photogrammetry work already completed so when it came to commissioning the work MAST turned to Deep3D. However, the whole site Read more about Deep3D and the Coronation Virtual Trail[…]

Underwater Photogrammetry…on the radio

Yes, you read the title correctly! Word of what Deep3D was up to in Scapa Flow this November reached the editors at BBC Orkney. Intrigued to know more, they sent along a reporter and recorded a short interview with Simon. The interview begins at 12 minutes 50 into the broadcast:- Photogrammetry on the BBC. Digital Elevation Models

Next year sees the start of a little project run by The Shipwreck Project to find the missing pieces in a great story involving a Second World War single seat fighter that crashed in Weymouth Bay. We know the date and the fate of the pilot – he bailed out and was rescued – but we do Read more about Digital Elevation Models[…]

Scanning Humans and Other Details

The orthophotos generated from the 3D model can be very detailed indeed, but they can reveal flaws if things move during scanning. With humans, this causes a bit of a problem. Here’s an example of the E49 and model Rob:-   This print is A1 in size and Rob appears alongside the submarine, adding great Read more about Scanning Humans and Other Details[…]

Updated, refined & revised – SS Gwladmena

A combination of depth (38m) and size (67m x 9m) prevented the SS Gwladmena being scanned on a single dive, but by taking two sets of images from different dives the entire ship can be built. Dive one concentrated on the plan view of the decks. Dive two concentrated on the surrounding seabed and hull. Read more about Updated, refined & revised – SS Gwladmena[…]

SS Gwladmena – Shetland Islands

With the summer here, Deep3D has been busy. One very large and collaborative project will be published later this year but we have managed to slip away and scan some wrecks in Shetland. Built in 1878, the SS Gwladmena sank in 1918 and now lies in 38m of water close to Lerwick. At 70m long Read more about SS Gwladmena – Shetland Islands[…]
